WHICKHAM PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB Competition Rules

 Issued September 2009 (These rules supersede all other previously published rules)

 

 General Rules

 

1.   Only fully paid-up Members of the Club may enter Club Competitions.

2.   No print or projected Image, which has gained 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in any Club Competition, maybe entered in any other Club Competition in the same or a different medium.

3.   Prints submitted must be mounted and the mount should not exceed 20"x16".

4.   A Projected Image can be defined as either a Slide or a Digital Image projected via a computer. An entry can be up to either 3 slides OR 3 digital images ONLY. No mixtures are acceptable.

i.Slides should be submitted in 2"x2" mounts and be spotted in the bottom left-hand corner. Slides should be mounted in glass unless stated otherwise.

ii.Projected Digital Images should be submitted with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. File sizes should be no greater than 450k.

5.   All competition entries should originate from camera based images exposed only by the entrant.

 6.   The entrant's name must NOT appear on any entry. The only acceptable identification will be a Title and a Club Membership Number on the slide mount, the reverse of the print mount or in a digital file name.

7.   To constitute a valid competition, a minimum of three members must have submitted entries.

8.   Entries will not be marked by judges but those placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Highly Commended will be awarded points on the basis of 6, 5, 4 and 3 respectively. Judges will be encouraged to highly commend all work, not placed, which they feel is of a high standard. All other entries will be allocated 2 points. The Portfolio Competition is the only exception to this, see specific rules. These points will be used to determine Club Competitor of the Year, Print Competitor of the Year, Projected Image Competitor of the Year, the Print Merit Award and the Projected Image Merit Award.

9.   In the event of a tie, in any competition, the trophy will be held jointly

  

Club Print Competition and Club Projected Image Competition

 

1.   These are two separate competitions and each consists of 3 medal rounds.

2.   A maximum of 3 entries can be made in each round in each competition. Medals will be awarded to the members whose entries come 1st in any of the three rounds.

3.   The overall winners will be the members with the most points from their six highest scoring prints / projected images, providing that at least one is from each round. e.g. If one round is not entered only the top scoring five will be counted.

 

Best Beginner - Prints and Best Beginner - Projected Image

 

1.   The same rules apply as for the Club Print Competition and the Club Projected Image Competitions, with the following exceptions.

2.   Only club members who have NOT won any club competition or beginners trophy in the current or previous seasons are eligible to receive print and projected image merit awards.

Members who wish to declare themselves eligible or ineligible for these awards may do so by informing the Competition Secretary at the beginning of any season.

 

Portfolio Competition (Prints) and Portfolio Competition (Projected Images)

     

1.   Members can submit up to TWO sets of 3 Prints and TWO sets of 3 projected images, each set to illustrate a single theme of the Member's own choice. Each set of the 3 will be judged as a PORTFOLIO and not as individual entries. Any set of 3 should not be a mixed format. A 4th PI ”slide” containing all three images is recommended to help illustrate the theme when projected - this may be of any size as it will not be judged

2.   The winners will be the members whose entries come 1st in either of these competitions 

3.   In addition to any individual titles (if given), each print or projected image must indicate the theme depicted, e.g.contra-jour1, contra-jour2, contra-jour3. 

4.   No print or projected image may be entered in these competitions which have previously been entered in another internal club competition.

5.   Double points will be awarded for each entry of prints or projected image in this competition. Points will therefore be awarded on the basis of 12,10, 8, and 6 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly Commended, respectively, in this competition. All other entries will be awarded 4 points.

 

Portrait Competition (Prints)* and Portrait Competition (Projected images)*

 

1.             Up to 4 prints and 4 projected images may be entered into these Competitions. The winners will be the members whose entries come 1st in either of these competitions.

2.             Entries into the Portrait Competitions are restricted to human subjects only.

*NB.         The Natural History and Portrait Competitions will alternate each year until further notice.

 

Natural History Competition (Prints)* and Natural History Competition (Projected Images)*

1.             Up to 4 Prints and 4 Projected Images may be entered into these Competitions. The winners will be the members whose entries come 1st in either of these competitions.

2.             Nature from all branches of Natural History is eligible but restricted to photographs that truly depict a specimen in its natural environment. No human element should be present.

3.             Artificially prepared hybrids, mounted specimens, obviously set arrangements, derivations or photographic manipulations are not eligible.

4.             Accurate descriptive, rather than 'cute' titles, are recommended for Natural History photographs.

*NB.         The Natural History and Portrait Competitions will alternate each year until further notice.

 

Print Competitor of the Year

 

1.             Points from every print entry will be accumulated from all internal club competitions, to determine the Print Competitor of the Year.

 

Projected Image Competitor of the Year

 

1.             Points from every projected image entry will be accumulated from all internal club competitions, to determine the Projected Image Competitor of the Year.

 

Club Competitor of the Year

 

1.             The highest 15 points from every print and projected image entry will be accumulated from all internal club competitions to determine the Club Competitor of the Year.
